I have a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration, contemplating to get my Masters in Marketing. I am currently in health care marketing right now. I work for a small company so pretty much I am the marketing department. In what areas should I work on? Appreciate your help.

I was a marketing consultant for 7 years. First, find a mentor in the field of marketing consulting and see if they will help you get starting...maybe working for them. Two try to establish yourself as an expert in an area - research, promotions, event planning, communications, advertising, internet, etc. by giving seminars for the local Chamber of Commerce or writing articles for the local papers. Three start a network of associates to get referrals. Good luck - it is great fun!

Your decision will depend on the specific sector and sub-sector in which you want to consult (stay in health care, move to other industry specialty - perhaps supplier to hc, etc). For this response, I'll use 'HC' to cover the assumed healthcare industry. Who influences the leadership of the HC area you're experienced in? Other consultants, consortiums (think tanks etc)? What about the smaller (boutique) types of consultants who have a very specific niche that they focus on and are well regarded in? Very importantly, get out to visit your company's customers, regardless of whether this is the specific sub-sector you want to go into. Find out and confirm what their challenges are, how your company helps them (quantify the impact as much as possible) AND find out about the other areas of their biz and who the work with as vendors/consultants in those areas. Connecting these dots is important. Then network with the right folks. You can even ask your customer for an introduction to the other vendors - not for a career discussion, but for a broader and better understanding of their biz so that your company can do a better job in serving them. Good luck!
