Thinking about getting a masters in marketing. Almost 30, unemployed, have a degree but

Thinking about getting a masters in marketing. Almost 30, unemployed, have a degree but....?
In this economy finding employment is a real challenge. Every job that I'm interested in seems to require a masters degree in marketing (the same job would have only asked for a degree years ago, but with the current economic situation employers are much pickier). The ONLY reason I wouldnt go back to school is because of the cost. I know it's what I want to do-i love to write, am involved in the graphic design community, have a growing network of followers through my blog-and I'd like to use those skills in a marketing position. my degrees are in international relations and animal biology...so not much marketing experience there even though I'm told I have the right skill set. Would you put a hold on everything to go back to school for a masters even if you'll end up with a massive bill? is the opportunity cost worth it?

Masters in Marketing, any advice

Masters in Marketing, any advice?
I'm considering a masters in Marketing. I'm finishing undergrad degrees in Media Studies & Sociology, minor counseling. I've been looking at schools in England (Middlesex, Reading & Brunel). I plan on taking an internship in the promotional section of Atlantic records. Other than that I do not have any other experience in Marketing. I'm looking for some tips to help direct me regarding grad school. I know I need to take GMAT, and have a few years experience, other than that, what else can I do to help me with grad school? Also, I noted that some grad schools want a minimum of 3years experience, which I don't have. Is there anyways to work around that as an International student? PS. I plan on applying for grad school in 2012.

I don't have an answer. Just wanted to say congratulations in taking one of the most in demand careers. Rated by Money Magazine as the best bang for your college buck. Director of Marketing - requires a masters. High pay, low stress, good hours, high quality of life. Good luck. /

never heard of anyone with a Master's in Mktg - I seriously doubt it would find you any better jobs - you might just be wasting 2 yrs and $40,000 for nothing and a grad degree WITHOUT a few yrs work experience is worthless in most cases - you would be over qualified for entry level jobs and under experienced for anything requiring a masters

Will a masters in marketing help me get my first job

Will a masters in marketing help me get my first job?
I have just completed my Bsc Hon Degree in Business Management (Specializing in Human Resource Management and Marketing) from the University of Wales. I am a citizen of Sri Lanka and hoping to apply immediately for a Masters in Marketing at Deakin University in Australia. The reason behind this is that the Sri Lankan, and world job market is doing very bad at the moment due to the financial crisis, therefore i wish to be very qualified in about an years or two's time when the crisis situation is over hopefully. I presume it is going to be extremely competitive at that time. I would like to know if after getting such a masters , whether i would be able get a good starting job in the marketing field in Australia? (I cannot do an MBA cause i don't have any experience in the related field)

I got 2 jobs in the last month both in marketing. It's all about your attitude and if they believe you can do it. I had no experience at all. Sadly wasn't for me and quit both. I'm from Melbourne.

2
You obviously are a strategic thinker --- planning ahead -- seeking guidance --- this is a good sign. Why are you stuck on Australia? Why not think the whole South Pacific area -- you go wherever they hire you -- Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Japan -- wherever. If you got your degree with honors, you might want to consider work as a trainer for a sales force -- it's sort of like teaching. Also you might want to look into Marketing Communications -- it's sort of like being a writer (of Annual Reports etc). I would say a Masters in Marketing is worth a shot for you, especially if you broaden your search as you proceed further toward the goal of being employed. Deakin University may have good placement abilities and you should take full advantage, so your not just buying an education, and a sheepskin, you are also buying access to a job interview. Polish up your verbal skills. Take speech classes or get a speech coach. It's not a matter of accent so much as posture and delivery -- those have to be management quality -- otherwise it doesn't matter how much you know, you won't be hired. Body language counts a lot in an interview, as does speaking style. It should be clear, concise, confident, and comfortable for the listener (not too fast, not too much data in each sentence - give them time to understand what you are saying -- look at them as you speak to make sure they are following you -- that you are getting through). Short answer: Yes go ahead get the Masters, try not to wind up in too much debt, use all the facilities to line up interviews before you graduate. Good luck. Hope this helps you.

Lol, not all MBA's are math intensive, so I would go ahead and check them out anyways. Look into communication master's degrees, many of them have a focus on advertising and etc.

MBA are the best may to get into business and marketing you wont have to take a lot of math. Check out http://www.adelphi.edu/amMBA it is a great program and will give you some information.

Master of Science in marketing, of course. But any business degree involves math and statistics. Many schools that offer the MBA also offer the MS degree. Consult the Official MBA Guide. Should I pursue Masters in Marketing or Masters in Marketing Research

Should I pursue Masters in Marketing or Masters in Marketing Research?
Hey, all. I need some advice and opinion on postgraduate studies. Currently I am an undergrad marketing major student and marketing research particularly fascinates me. From September this year, I will be starting part-time work with AC Nielsen. I intend to do Masters starting in spring or summer semester of 2010. However I cannot decide whether I should pursue a Masters in Marketing or a Masters in Marketing Research program. After completing the degree in USA, I will be settling down with my family in Australia and hence will need to find employment there. I am keen on working in the marketing research industry for 4 to 5 years to gain valuable experience before entering into a MBA program. In your opinion, should I pursue a Masters in Marketing, or specialize with Masters in Marketing Research (since it is the industry I am keen to work in)? Any advice from you in this regard will be really appreciated. Thanks for your time!

masters degree in business marketing??
i'm thinking of doing my masters in marketing right after my degree. i understand that most people get a couple of years of work experience first before they do their masters. so if i were to go find a job with my masters degree , will i be stuck in a situation where i am overqualified for undergrad jobs.. yet not good enough to take up a position that requires a masters degree because of my lack of work experience? well, its not wharton but its one of the best business school in australia... Melbourne University..so.. the ranking part is ok i guess..

Yes, you would. Getting an MBA from an unranked school won't help your job prospects nearly as much as getting one from a ranked school. And the ranked schools want you to have three to five years of work experience. If you are good enough to get into a top school -- you would be much better off waiting and getting an MBA from a top school.

What are the best online universities that offer masters degrees

What are the best online universities that offer masters degrees?
I would like to get an online masters degree in marketing. What are the best online universities? Are there any reputable conventional Universities that offer full degrees online? Harvard offers online courses, some of which could be counted towards a masters degree, but does not offer a full degree online. I am not a residence of the US and not able to travel to attend regular courses but I am able to travel for tests. I guess I'm looking for a good marketing masters program from a reputable university.

There are a lot of universities and colleges that offer accreditated online schools. It's very important to verify the institution has the correct accreditation you're looking for. Personally, I think some of the best online schools have both brick and mortar degrees and online degrees. For example, I work the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. We have approximately 7,000 students on our campus, but we also offer three online graduate degrees: criminal justice, project management, and engineering. Peterson's is a very trusted resource that will list many schools that are well accreditated in the online area.

2
As there are many online universities that offers masters degrees but it is important that the university that you are selecting should be accredited regionally or nationally. Because some employers gives preferences to accredited online universities. Following is a list of top ranked accredited online universities that offers master degrees in Marketing and Business. University of Phoenix Brown College American Inter Continental University Online Colorado Technical University Hesser College

3
No doubt harvard is a good college that provides online education. Its always better if their are options to choose from. So just log on to http://www.thedegreeexperts.com/sd-mba-in-marketing-172.aspx here is the list of top colleges that provide online education in marketing. All the colleges listed here are accredited and legit. So you would have list to choose from. Choose the college that suits your criteria the most. Was nice helping!

4
I am not aware of a top school that offers an online masters degree specifically in marketing. However, you may be able to get a degree in a closely related field depending on what area of marketing you want to pursue. So this answer is going to be geared toward universities with an excellent reputation. Harvard's Extension School has some programs that only require that you take a single class in person. If you plan your course work carefully, you can take a summer session class and only have to be in Cambridge for 8 weeks. So the amount of time you'd need to be in the US would be minimal. If you can travel for tests, this might work out for you. Also, Harvard's Extension School seems to have some of the lowest tuition of any reputable online school, so you might actually come out ahead financially over some of the other options. Generally you should expect to spend about $18,000 to $20,000 on tuition. Here is some information about the Harvard Extension School experience: http://www.productivity501.com/harvard-masters-degree/6463/ Another place you might look is Penn State. Many of their programs require some type of residency. The MBA program requires you to come for two week long classes. Still, if you can travel for tests, this is probably doable. The cost will probably be in the $20,000 to $60,000 range depending on what classes you take. http://www.worldcampus.psu.edu/ Two other places you might check: http://scpd.stanford.edu/ http://www.cvn.columbia.edu/ They are both significantly more expensive than Harvard or Penn State. Stanford may require that you have a corporate sponsor. Columbia looks like their program may be possible without any travel at all. Good luck!

Many libraries offer assistance through some type of chat program. Examples: http://www.askaway.info/ http://www.askherepa.org/ http://www.spl.org/default.asp?pageID=info_help_ask Your college career center may have resources to help as well (if you still live close to the college you attended). MBA or Masters in Marketing

MBA or Masters in Marketing?
I have a bachelors degree in Business admin. I am thinking of going for an MBA or a Masters in Marketing. Marketing is my chosen field for a career. For an MBA I would have to take all of the 101 course again like accounting, finance, etc.(which I would have to do as I graduated 10 years ago). I would rather go for the Master as its less credits and it focuses on courses I like, however I am nervous it may not have the prestige of an MBA as far getting me future jobs.

I am finishing my marketing degree and would like to obtain a masters in accounting. Advice

I am finishing my marketing degree and would like to obtain a masters in accounting. Advice?
I have been researching information and have found a lot of conflicting ideas. I would like to sit for the CPA and, of course, I would like to work for one of the big four. Can I get all of my hours in? Does my school of choice matter? Does the career change out weight the hefty loans? Any advice is helpful advise. THANKS!
Higher Education (University +) - 1 Answers

Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :

In terms of getting your hours in - it depends on how many semesters you are planning on taking to get your Master's. I had an international business undergrad, so I had only taken Acctg Principles and Cost. At my school, the general business version of cost did not replace the school of accounting version of cost, so I had to retake that, along with the entire undergrad accounting curriculum. For me, this meant four full-time semesters of almost only Accounting classes (had advanced stats as well) to get my masters, and I would presume the same would be true for a Marketing undergrad. If you get your CPA right away (highly recommended, like BEFORE you start work), and then start in the Big 4, you will be in good shape. Join Beta Alpha Psi, or any other similar organization, and stay involved. Soft skills are just as important as grades in being successful. I started tutoring right away, which helped me to learn the material even better, and forced me to learn how to explain it to people. Yes, choice of school matters. I went to UW-Whitewater, which I contend is the best school in the country for MPA (but I am obviously biased). The funniest part is that I went to a public university, but came out in the same job, making the same salary, as others who went to Marquette and other private schools. Their loans were much larger than mine, but here we were, doing the same thing for the same pay. You decide which makes better sense from an accounting perspective ;P Best of luck, and don't give up.

Online MBA programs miss the most essential element of the MBA--the interaction and teamwork between students. I would ONLY take an MBA program that is offered through a program that also has a physical campus, and state schools are often the most cost-effective choice. Another benefit of the MBA program is the alumni network--does the school have an active alumni outreach? Also, what is the placement record of the school? The best major is the best for you. I could say accounting but if you don't like accounting, obviously that won't work. Marketing is good if you take the rigorous statistics classes that go along with it, as that is the most valuable aspect of marketing.

2
There are many colleges and universities that offer online degrees, and more specifically, many that offer an MBA program. Before you choose a program, I recommend you make a list of schools that offer programs in this area (check links 1 & 2). From there, compare the costs of each program, and consider your budget. Next, be sure that your school is accredited (check my 3rd link). Be sure that programs you're looking into not only are entitled what you want (ie international business and/or marketing) but also offer specific coursework that you find appealing. If you're going to spend money on an advanced degree, you want to be sure that you aren't 'bored' with the program itself! Good luck!

3
There is no answer for your question. The best program is the one that suits you best. The Official MBA Guide is designed to help you find it. You can search for distance learning programs and then specify criteria that are important to you, to find the one that is most suitable.

Business Psychology would be an excellent Masters if you want to pursue a career in Marketing, as out out of the whole 'Busniess' topics, this is the most related to the 'human' aspect of business; the pyschological aspect of business is one that is often overlooked/under-studied in many general courses. Marketing focuses primarily on the interrelationship between your product/service/brand and your customers/end users wants and desires and motivations, and how to bridege the gap between the two. I did a small bit of business psychology in my Commerce degree and it was really interesting, really useful and beat boring stuff like the Accounting modules hands down! It sounds like it would be a very interesting course and actually - I'm a bit jealous! I don't know what Uni I would chose though; that is a personal thing - look at the clubs/societies/location etc. As far as I am aware, they are pretty similar in terms of quality, so just go to whichever one you instinctively think you will enjoy more:-) Good Luck!!

your degree is whatever it says on your diploma. If it's an MA, it's an MA, and nothing else.

2
M is for Master, actually Magister in Latin, if you undertake a masters degree in the arts discipline then it becomes a MA on completion. alternatively M.Sc or M.Eng

3
No, you tell them you have a Masters in Marketing.

4
M.B.A. stands for Masters in Business Administration; some MBAs have specializations (Accounting, Finance, Marketing) It doesn't sound like you have an MBA

5
To answer your last question, NO. You can't say you have an MBA if you have an MS or MA degree in marketing. The MS in marketing focuses solely on marketing training. The MBA is a general broad degree covering a wide variety of business issues and training students for careers in managing any area of business up to CEO. MBA students study accounting, finance, marketing, statistics, management, economics, strategy, policy, leadership and similar courses. The MBA was developed because people with technical backgrounds getting promoted into management are not always able to manage, and people in management often don't understand the technical fields they manage. That's why MBA programs prefer students with degrees in other than business and with 2-4 years of work experience. Their graduates learn to manage and can speak the language of the people they manage, whether that is engineering, chemistry, medicine, music, or any other field. Before you consider which MBA program is for you, consult the Official MBA Guide, a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. Full Sail isn't regionally accredited. For your masters degree, the rep, and accreditation status, of where you get your degree matters HUGELY. I would have you avoid any masters program that's given by a school that isn't at least regionally accredited.

3
I hate to add onto the negative feedback, but it seems like this is a pretty narrow focus for a Masters degree. I would look to get a broader background in marketing, applying it to the Internet is simply learning what tools are available for that channel. Marketing is more about concepts and psycology then it is about the specific channel by which you are going to delivery your message.

From what I know, many people with degrees in other areas go on for a masters in those two areas, particularly business. Some programs might want you to make up some deficits (take a few undergrad courses first) but if you meet gpa and other requirements it shouldn't be a problem. Look at petersons.com for more info on program requirements, and call schools you are interested in to confirm what they would want to see from you. Good luck!

why not? I have a BA in mass com and an MBA in marketing. go for it. good luck

What you will be doing is actually sales, when you are in marketing you are actually trying to sell a product. You are trying to change peoples way of buying so they can buy your product, you will be trying to persuade people. I think it's pretty interesting, you get to be creative and change the way people think, and their buying concepts. Sometimes it includes alot of statistics, looking at the way people act, and the way people buy products. Hope this helps.

MBA in marketing.

2
is this a trick question? you have to know the answer is mba. take that from a language arts teacher.....

3
Obviously, the MBA in marketing. But, here's the deal. A marketing degree will lead toward a sales position which you can get without an MBA. Only go for the MBA if you want to focus on something more like MIS or accounting because then the MBA will allow you to apply for higher level consulting jobs. The MBA IS a good idea, but just major in something in business besides marketing. The Masters in English really isn't that valuable. I mean, unless you want to teach college or spend the rst of your life teaching high school-what good is the MA IN ENGLISH.

I graduated with a B.B.A. in Marketing. How can I get a Masters in Aerospace Engineering

I graduated with a B.B.A. in Marketing. How can I get a Masters in Aerospace Engineering?
I graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing. However, my passion is in aviation and aeronautics. How can I get into Aerospace Engineering field? Should I go back for a second undergraduate major (Bachelor of Science/Mechanical engineer) or can i get a masters in in engineering with a B.B.A. Would it be worth going back?

Chris, only you can decide if doing another undergraduate degree is worth while --- this is because only you can properly gauge your passion for aeronautics. If you have a fire in your belly for aeronautics, go for it BUT only after considering what is involved. If you decide to do a bachelor or mechanical engineering degree [with an aeronautics specialization] or a bachelor of aeronautical engineering, your business degree will not be wasted. More and more of an engineer's time is spend on management and marketing tasks. When I studied electrical engineering, I did an avionics biased course and this exposed me to aeronautical engineering in general --- it is endlessly interesting. Before you enrol in an engineering course, make sure that you fully understand that such courses are mainly applied mathematics and physics [at an advanced level]. Read the Wikipedia entry for aeronautical engineering and engineering in general. Also consult books such as "Which College" to find the most suitable engineering school.

2
I do believe that you will have to go back and get a second degree. They might give you credit for some of the course work that you took to get your business degree. The only way you are going to find out is to contact the admissions office of a university. Colleges do not have Masters programs. If you can pull it off, I would go for it.

3
You cannot enrol in a Masters program in any engineering field with a BBA in Marketing. I suggest you get a second undergraduate engineering degree -- probably Mech or Elec Eng'g -- before you can get accepted to any Engineering Masters program. Hope this helps.

sure, in the US you probably can't be hired directly to Marketing Manager with only the degrees, but you can start working in marketing with either of those degrees.

Or should I just do my masters at UGA?

With an associates or bachelors, you can probably get a marketing assistant job where you help a marketing manager with marketing communications, graphic design, product support, etc. A master's degree and some experience will land you a marketing management career but it could also be used for other fields like public relations, marketing research, business analysis, etc.

What Masters degrees can I get with a Bachelors in Marketing

What Masters degrees can I get with a Bachelors in Marketing?
I'll be getting my bachelors degree in marketing in May and I'm looking to get a Masters degree but not too sure I want to get an MBA. I'd like to get a Masters in something other than business to keep more options open but I'm not sure what my options are. Anyone know what other programs (if there are any besides an MBA) that I could get into with my degree?

I suggest going out into the work place and working for 2-3 years before diving into your Masters. In fact, most programs recommend that. If you don't have experience but you do have a masters, you won't be TOO much more of an asset. So get some work experience and figure out waht you like to do. I'm getting my Masters in Marketing, which is exciting.

2
it's better to decide first and then get the appropriate masters. an MBA is always a good bet (and the logical extension of a marketing BA) but only if you want to pursue a career in the world of business. if you want to teach, then it would be different.

3
A master's degree majoring in marketing and corporate communications, advertising or events management. =)

4
Virtually anything - even applied math. Many (probably even most) masters are designed as conversion degrees to give you professional quals in an area you did not necessarily study as an undergrad. Whether to get a Masters after you have completed your undergrad or get a bit of work experience first is a personnel choice - I don't think there is any right or wrong answer. Personally what I would do is get a masters immediately after my degree to ready me for the job market then get an MBA later. But a case can be made to get an MBA directly after you degree as well - especially for technical degrees like engineering and CS to give you some business background. But that could just as easily be done by an Msc in business. The choice may be taken out of your hands however - some masters require job experience. Thanks Bill

I am graduating this spring with a bachelor in business management. I am thinking about going for my MBA in either Marketing or Management. Which is a better field with more opportunities? Also what are some job opportunities I could land right out of school with an MBA i couldnt get with just my bachelors? Thanks

There is no MBA in marketing or MBA in management. Maybe you mean MS degree. MBA means Master in Business Administration. With graduate degrees in management or marketing, you should get somewhat better paying jobs than without the graduate degree. With an MBA you have many more opportunities because it is a broader degree training you to manage any area of business up to CEO. However, while you can get an MS directly out of college, you need 2-4 years work experience before you apply for the MBA. Some MBA programs may accept you without work experience if you have a high GPA and high GMAT score. Find the program that best fits you in the Official MBA Guide, a free public service.

Masters in Marketing without an Economics bachelor's

Masters in Marketing without an Economics bachelor's?
All right, well I am about to start college as a freshman. The major I am interested in is English with concentration in writing. Since I want to work in the publishing industry, I believe this will work for me. However, just in case I am looking into double majoring, Economics. Is it possible to get a Masters in Marketing without an Economics degree, and only with an English degree? I'm thinking of either working in editing, possibly marketing.

Absolutely possible, it doesn't matter what your undergrad degree is in when you go for your MBA.

2
You'd be going for a Masters in Business Administration in Marketing. You don't need to have any specific undergrad degree to get into an MBA program, but keep in mind that most require you to have some work experience. Go to college and study what you're interested in, especially because you're considering grad school. I don't know personally, but I've heard that double majoring in two liberal arts subjects (English and Econ) is useless.

I'm trying to find a masters degree in CREATIVE marketing in Europe, preferably in Spain, Italy or the UK. I prefer having something which can offer me an internship, and I'd like to opt for a masters which is less business oriented and more on the communications and creative side, as my first degree is in communications and not commerce. I already contacted IED communications and thats quite what i'm looking for. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

A masters program in the sciences will require a certain amount of background to apply. You don't need a major in it, but you need particular classes, which might be as many as needing a major. Look up some masters programs - they'll list the requirements for application.

2
Hmm... even though there is a lot of psychology used in Marketing, it is mostly "consumer psychology" which is actually the name of a major at some schools. When it comes down to it, it is up to the discretion of the grad school. To be honest, I think it will be hard. Psychology is a relatively common major, and having just a bachelor's in it is almost worthless. Therefore, you're gonna be up against tons of Psychology majors when applying to Psych grad school. If the school has one more slot open, and they have you with say a 3.6 and a Psych major with a 3.0, I think they might just take them. My point is, you might be able to, but it's gonna be hard. A 4.0 might be your only hope. If you're passionate about psychological stuff, I'm pretty sure the finance/accounting core stuff in the marketing major will bore you, so think about majoring in Psych and minoring in Marketing.
